PROGRESS UPDATE – April 2021
With the poor weather slowing progress over the winter months, things are ramping up again on site. Further traffic switches have taken place opening the second phase of works for the final push to completion.
Further switches are planned over the coming weeks, however residents will be made aware of any disruptions in advance.
Work to the new pedestrian access ramp and stairs opposite Calderglen Country Park junction is progressing well. With the piling works finished and most of the concrete retaining wall sections now placed.
Once complete this will allow improved pedestrian access for wheelchair users and buggies to Calderglen Country Park.
We would like to thank all our stakeholders and the public for their ongoing support and co-operation on the project. Completion of the project is now expected to be Summer 2021!
EMERGENCY WORKS – SCOTTISH POWER Tuesday 28 January 2020
Please be aware that due to an emergency call out Scottish Power will be instructing 4-way temporary traffic signals on Torrance Roundabout with immediate effect.
This is nothing to do with the current road works that are ongoing along Greenhills Road and Strathaven Road.
We are unsure how long the temporary traffic signals will be in place.
Thank you for your patience.
Progress Update in recent months
Wills Bros have been making progress across the scheme in preparation for the construction phase. Ground surveys and investigations including trial holes have been undertaken throughout the site, which form part of the early site investigation process.
Earthworks have commenced between Singer Roundabout and Langlands Roundabout along with construction of the SUD’s ponds (Sustainable Urban Drainage ponds), at the southern end of the site, close to Langlands West Roundabout.
Utility diversions are continuing across the site for Scottish Water and SGN.
The new staff car park at Merson Group is nearing completion with kerbing, paving blocks and street lighting now in place. Final surfacing of the car park is now underway and is due for completion over the coming days.
Community Benefits – Assisting Local Primary Schools
When Anna Kelly and Ronnie Johnson visited Crosshouse Primary School back in February to undertake a talk on “People Who Help” they were asked whether there would be a possibility of the project team donating some tree stumps and wooden stepping stones to the school to help with an outdoor teaching area that they were looking to create. Due to the amount of large sized trees that were being felled in preparation for the new Greenhills Road / A726 Strathaven Road Corridor Improvements, this was something that we were happy to assist with. With the help from CTS (Central Tree Surgeons) 35 tree stumps and 50 stepping stones were cut to varying sizes suitable for use by primary school children.
On Wednesday 17th April, representatives from the site team delivered the stumps and stepping stones and helped finish the outdoor teaching area. Students and teachers alike were happy with their new outdoor teaching area and personally thanked all involved for all the time and effort that went in to making this possible.
Progress Update
The photograph above shows one area where site clearance has been undertaken (right hand side of the photograph) to make way for the new roundabout at the entrance to New Farm Restaurant/exit from Calderglen Country Park.
There are also several utility diversions being undertaken by Mackenzie Construction, on behalf of Scottish Water which will allow the construction works to get underway.
The photograph above shows utility diversion works being undertaken along Strathaven Road.
Accommodation works, shown below at Merson Group involve construction of a new car parking area which will provide parking for Merson Group staff following loss of car parking spaces to make way for the new carriageway construction.
In addition to the works described above, environmental works are ongoing with continual mitigation measures being installed and maintained for watercourses and environmentally sensitive species.
Keeping Communities Informed
The Site Offices have now been established on Greenhills Road, off Hurlawcrook Roundabout. The project team have now transferred to site and have continued with site clearance and enabling works with the main construction phase now underway.
During the construction works the speed limit throughout the site will be reduced to 30mph. The reduced speed limit will remain in place for the duration of the works. We would ask that drivers obey the new speed limit to assist us in ensuring that both road users and the construction workforce are safe during the works.
Site Clearance
Wills Bros have worked closely with local tree surgeons Central Tree Surgeons who’s sustainable actions mean all of our waste trees, scrub, bushes and roots will be recycled into woodchip which will be turned into either furnace fuel for a biomass plant; or to create wood pellets for the Biogas or Biofuel industry.
All trees removed throughout the project shall be carried out in compliance with the recommendations within BS 3998 ‘Tree Work Recommendations’. Compensatory planting is going to be carried out across the project to ensure a Net Ecological Gain.
This includes: Grass Seeding; Wild Flower Planting; Ornamental Planting; and a natural Noise Barrier for those residing on the east side of Strathaven Rd and north of Greenhills Road.
Public Information Event
As part of Wills Bros Public Engagement commitments for the Greenhills Rd/A726 Strathaven Rd Corridor Improvement Works, the project management team (with support from the Client, South Lanarkshire Council) organised a Public Information Event which was held at Calderglen Country Park in East Kilbride on the 28th February 2019.
The event was very well attended by interested parties. It was arranged as a follow-up to a Supplier Engagement Day held in December 2018, and an ongoing engagement strategy with local schools, residents, & businesses in the area. The event ran between 10.30am and 8.00pm and was attended by core members of the management team from both Wills Bros and South Lanarkshire Council. In excess of 130 people were recorded on the Attendance Register throughout the course of the day.
